Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedure in the developed world. Inside the human eye, there is a crystalline lens which sits just behind the iris (the colour part of your eye). This lens can become cloudy and if it does that, it is called a cataract.

The cataract can be removed by an ultrasound machine, not a laser as many people think. An artifical lens, called an intraocular implant, is placed inside the eye as part of the procedure. In most cases, if not all, the procedure can be done under local anaesthesia as a day case.
